Lines That Do Their Job
Parking lot striping marks stalls, accessible spaces, aisles, arrows, crosswalks and fire lanes so drivers park straight and traffic flows. Faded lines lead to crooked parking, lost spaces and confusion at entrances. It is also the final step after new paving or sealcoating, and the one visitors see first.
The ADA and restriping
The U.S. Department of Justice's guidance is clear that restriping a lot triggers the 2010 ADA Standards for accessible parking. The number of accessible spaces depends on the total in the lot: a lot with 1 to 25 spaces needs at least one, 26 to 50 needs two, and so on. One of every six accessible spaces, and always at least one, must be van-accessible. Car spaces must be at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch access aisle; van spaces can be 132 inches with a 60-inch aisle or 96 inches with a 96-inch aisle. Signs are mounted with the bottom at least 60 inches above the ground, and the spaces and aisles must be nearly level, no steeper than 1:48. We check all of this before painting.
New layouts
After a lot is rebuilt or expanded, we plan stall and aisle widths, traffic flow and accessible spaces, chalk it out and paint. HomeGuide notes that new layouts typically cost 20 to 50 percent more than restriping existing lines.
Timing and paint
Paint goes on clean, dry pavement in mild weather, and on new sealcoat only after it cures. In Terre Haute that means spring through fall. Small lots can often be done early or late in the day.
What we mark
- Standard and angled stalls
- Accessible and van-accessible spaces with aisles and symbols
- Arrows, stop bars and crosswalks
- Fire lanes and curb paint
- Stenciled numbers and words
Fire lanes and local rules
Fire lanes and no-parking zones are often set by the local fire department. We ask what has been required for your property and paint to it.
Apartments and campus-area lots
Rental lots near Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman see turnover each semester. Numbered or reserved stalls help residents and managers alike, and we can stencil them during restriping.
Costs at a glance
HomeGuide puts a 30 to 50 stall restripe at $500 to $1,200, with accessible stalls at $25 to $40 each and crosswalks or fire lanes at $35 to $75. New layouts typically run 20 to 50 percent more because of the planning and marking time.
Small lots
Even small lots for churches, offices and shops need at least one accessible space with an aisle, and the first accessible space must be van-accessible. We can restripe small lots in a few hours.

Parking Lot Striping Questions
How many accessible spaces do I need?
It depends on total spaces: 1 to 25 needs one, 26 to 50 needs two, 51 to 75 needs three, per the 2010 ADA Standards. One in six must be van-accessible.
Do I need signs too?
Yes. Paint alone does not meet the standard. Signs go at each accessible space with the bottom at least 60 inches above the ground.
How often should a lot be restriped?
When lines fade enough that drivers ignore them, and after every sealcoat.
Can you stripe concrete?
Yes. Prep differs slightly, but the layout rules are the same.
Can you stripe right after sealcoating?
Once the sealer has fully cured, usually after 24 to 72 hours depending on weather.
Do you paint fire lanes?
Yes, to the layout required for your property; HomeGuide prices fire lanes at $35 to $75 each.
