A River Town Built by Miners

Asphalt paving in Clinton means working in an older river town. Clinton was established in 1829 and named for DeWitt Clinton, the New York governor. It sits along the Wabash River in southern Vermillion County, and many of its early settlers were immigrants who came to work in the coal mines, many of them from Italy. The population peaked at 10,962 in 1920 and was 4,831 in 2020, so a lot of the housing dates from the city's coal-boom decades.

Low ground

At about 486 feet, Clinton sits close to river level. Floodplain soils along the Wabash, such as the Wabash series, are described by USDA as poorly drained clay that can pond and swell when wet. On ground like that, pavement fails from below if the base is thin. We test the subgrade, dig out soft material, and build a deeper compacted stone base where it is needed.

Older driveways

Most driveways in town have outlived their original base. Web-pattern cracking, sinking tire paths and crumbling edges call for replacement. When damage is limited, saw-cut patches and crack sealing make more sense. We price both on one quote.

Hills above the river

Not all of Clinton is flat. Streets climb away from the river, and some driveways are steep. Steep driveways need a firm base on the downhill side, edges that are supported, and a plan for water so it does not sheet down the surface and wash out the bottom.

Roads

State Road 163 passes through the city, and State Road 63 runs just west. New or changed connections to state roads go through INDOT's driveway permit. For work at city aprons and sidewalks, we check with the City of Clinton first.

Business lots

Shops, churches and offices downtown often have small lots that need patching, sealing and restriping. We schedule around business hours and services.

A typical Clinton scope

For a hillside driveway above the river, a quote often includes tear-out, rebuilding the base thicker on the downhill side, a swale or cross slope to move water off partway down, and paving with supported edges. For a flat lot near the river, it is more about removing soft soil and building up the base so water drains away.

Maintenance

Seal cracks each fall and sealcoat every few years. On low ground, also keep downspouts and ditches directed away from the pavement.

Small lots downtown

Churches and shops can often have their lots patched, sealed and restriped in a day or two.

Timing on low ground

River-level lots dry out later in spring, so we may schedule them later in the season to build the base on firm soil. Hot-mix paving runs through early fall.
