Small-Town Driveways and Country Drives

Asphalt paving in Clay City covers both a compact town and the farms around it. The town was platted in 1873, when the railroad reached the site, under the name Markland. That name was already taken by another Indiana post office, and residents objected to the next choice, Huntersville, so a local committee chose Clay City, after Kentucky statesman Henry Clay. The town covers about half a square mile and had 878 residents in 2020, after peaking at 1,503 in 1900.

In town

Homes in town mostly date from the railroad era and the decades after. Their driveways are usually short and close to the street. When the surface has cracked throughout and the wheel paths have sunk, we remove the old pavement, fix the base and pave new, typically in a day or two. Where the base is still firm, patches and a sealcoat are a cheaper path.

Gravel conversions

Many homes on the edges of town and in Harrison Township have gravel drives. Converting one starts with testing the stone. If it is deep and clean, we regrade, top up and compact it as base. If it has worked into the mud, it has to come out first.

Long lanes and tar and chip

For long country lanes, we price hot-mix asphalt and tar and chip together. HomeGuide puts tar and chip at $2 to $5 per square foot, roughly 30 to 40 percent less than asphalt, with a 7 to 10 year life for one layer. A common choice is asphalt near the house and chip seal on the long run.

Drainage

At about 594 feet, Clay City sits on upland ground typical of west-central Indiana, where soils tend to stay wet from December into spring. Whatever the surface, we restore a crown or slope so water runs off, and we check culverts where drives cross ditches.

Making small jobs work

Small driveways can run into minimum charges. HomeGuide notes that some contractors set minimums of $2,000 or more for paving. We quote small jobs on their own and, when we have other work in southern Clay County, schedule them together to keep costs reasonable.

A typical Clay City scope

For an older in-town driveway, a quote here usually includes breaking out the old surface, digging out soft areas, a compacted stone base and 2 to 3 inches of hot mix sloped toward the street. For a farm lane, it covers regrading, added stone, culvert checks and the surface of your choice.

Maintenance

On asphalt, seal cracks each fall and sealcoat every few years. On tar and chip, keep ditches clear and add a fresh chip layer when it wears thin.

Harrison Township ground

The land around Clay City is rolling upland and creek bottom. Driveways on slopes need supported edges and a way to move water off before it runs the full length; driveways in low spots need a deeper base. We look at both at the visit.

Timing

We pave late spring through early fall, and seal cracks in late summer and fall before the first freeze.

Clay City Questions

Do you take small single-car driveways?

Yes. We quote them individually and schedule them with nearby work when we can to keep mobilization costs down.

Asphalt or tar and chip for my lane?

Asphalt lasts longer and is smoother; tar and chip costs less and has better wet traction. We price both so you can choose.

Can my gravel be reused?

If it is deep, clean and compacted, much of it can become the base. Muddy stone must be removed first.

Do you check the culvert under my driveway?

Yes. We look at its size and condition and recommend replacement if it is crushed or undersized.

How long does tar and chip last?

HomeGuide says 7 to 10 years for a single layer and 12 to 15 for a double.

Do you serve Center Point and other southern Clay County towns?

Yes. We work across southern Clay County and schedule nearby jobs together where we can.

Can a sunken spot be fixed alone?

Yes. We saw-cut around it, rebuild the base and patch with hot mix.
