Low Ground on the West Bank

Asphalt paving in West Terre Haute is shaped by where the town sits. It lies on the west bank of the Wabash, across the river from Terre Haute, at an elevation of about 472 feet, lower than downtown Terre Haute. Samuel McQuilkin laid out the town on November 22, 1836, as McQuilkinsville. It was a coal town: by 1906 eleven mines were operating, producing an average of 2,000 tons a day. The population peaked at 4,310 in 1920 and was 2,157 in 2020.

Wet, slow-draining ground

Land near the river tends to be flat, low and slow to drain, and river-bottom soils can hold water well into spring. Pavement laid on that kind of ground with a thin base flexes and cracks quickly once it freezes and thaws. Before we quote, we dig a few test spots to see what is under your driveway. Where the soil is soft, we remove it and replace it with compacted stone, and we set a deliberate slope so water leaves the surface.

Older homes

With most of the town's houses dating from its mining years and the decades after, driveways here are usually past their first life. Some are thin asphalt on dirt; some are layers of patch. When the whole surface is cracked and sunken, replacement with a proper base is the fix that lasts. When only parts have failed, saw-cut patches and crack sealing cost much less.

Gravel to asphalt

Plenty of West Terre Haute homes still have gravel drives. Converting to asphalt means checking that stone first; if it has sunk into the mud, it has to come out. If it is deep and clean, much of it can stay as base.

On US 40

US 40 runs through town and is the last Indiana community westbound before Illinois; I-70 skirts the south edge. Businesses along US 40 need lots that drain and hold up to traffic. Changes to an entrance onto US 40 fall under INDOT's driveway permit, which we check before scheduling.

A small footprint

The town covers only about three-quarters of a square mile, so lots are close together and access can be tight. We size equipment to fit and let neighbors know when we will be working.

A typical West Terre Haute job

A common request is an older single-car driveway beside a house, thin asphalt over dirt, cracked throughout and lower than the yard so water collects on it. The fix is to break it out, raise and compact a new stone base so the finished surface sits slightly above the lawn, and pave with a fall toward the street or a side yard. Edges get backfilled with soil so they are supported.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and the county roads

North of town, US 150 heads toward Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, about five miles northwest. Homes along the county roads in Sugar Creek Township often have long gravel drives, and for those we price hot-mix asphalt and tar and chip together.

West Terre Haute Questions

My driveway holds water every spring. What can be done?

We regrade so the surface sheds water to the yard or a ditch, replace soft subgrade with compacted stone, and check any culvert. Paving over a low spot without fixing it just moves the puddle.

Is it worth patching an old driveway?

If the damage is in a few areas and the rest is firm, yes. If the whole surface is cracked and sunken, replacement is the better spend.

Do I need a permit for a driveway onto US 40?

Changes to an access onto a US highway generally go through INDOT's driveway permit. Repaving behind the right-of-way usually does not.

Can you fit equipment on a tight lot?

Yes. We size equipment to the access and plan staging so neighbors can get by.

How much does a small replacement cost?

HomeGuide's national range for a 200-square-foot driveway is $1,000 to $2,400, though some contractors set minimums of $2,000 or more. Soft-soil correction adds cost. Your written quote is the price.
