Paving in Canal Country
Asphalt paving in Riley is mostly rural work. The town itself is tiny, about 0.089 square miles with 238 residents at the 2020 census, but it sits in the middle of Riley Township's farms and country homes southeast of Terre Haute. Nathaniel Donham platted it on November 23, 1836, as Lockport, and it took the Riley name in 1911. The Wabash and Erie Canal ran through town until it closed in 1873, and remnants of locks and the canal are still visible in several places.
Long driveways and farm lanes
Most of our work around Riley is on long gravel drives that owners want sealed against dust and mud. For these, we price hot-mix asphalt and tar and chip side by side. HomeGuide puts hot-mix asphalt at $5 to $12 or more per square foot and tar and chip at $2 to $5. Many owners pave the area by the house with asphalt and chip-seal the long run of the lane.
Getting the base right
Before any surface goes down, the lane has to be built to shed water. We regrade the existing stone to restore a crown, add and compact stone where the lane is thin or rutted, and check the culverts where it crosses roadside ditches. Upland soils in this part of Indiana, like the Iva series, carry a seasonal water table close to the surface from December through April, according to USDA; a lane without good drainage softens in spring no matter what surface is on it.
Heavy equipment
If grain trucks or farm equipment use the lane, we build a thicker base and surface where they travel and turn.
In town
The few homes in Riley itself usually have short driveways onto local streets. Those are quick jobs: tear-out, base repair and paving in a day or two after the 811 locate.
County roads
Where a lane meets a county road, the culvert and the apron are often the first things to fail. We check the pipe size and condition and tie the new surface in cleanly.
Mixed surfaces on one lane
On a long lane, the area near the house takes the most turning and parking, while the long run mostly sees straight traffic. Paving the house end with hot-mix asphalt and the run with tar and chip puts the stronger, smoother surface where it matters and saves money on the rest.
Maintenance on chip seal
A tar-and-chip surface does not need sealcoating. When it wears thin, a new chip layer can be applied over it, which HomeGuide puts at $1 to $3 per square foot. Keeping ditches and culverts clear does more for its life than anything else.
Snow
If the township or a neighbor plows your lane, ask them to raise the blade about an inch over chip seal, as HomeGuide advises, so it does not scrape the stone loose.
Canal-era ground
The old Wabash and Erie Canal corridor through Riley left low spots and old fills in places. If your lane crosses one, we test the ground there in particular and build the base deeper where it is soft.

Riley Questions
What is the cheapest way to stop dust on my gravel lane?
Tar and chip is usually the lowest-cost sealed surface. HomeGuide puts it at $2 to $5 per square foot, versus $5 to $12 or more for hot-mix asphalt.
Can my existing gravel be the base?
Often, after regrading and compaction. Stone that has sunk into mud or is full of ruts needs repair first.
Do you check the culvert at the road?
Yes. A crushed or undersized culvert floods the lane and undermines it. We tell you if it should be replaced.
Can asphalt handle grain trucks?
If it is built for them. We use a thicker base and surface where heavy trucks travel and turn.
How long does a tar-and-chip lane last?
HomeGuide gives 7 to 10 years for a single layer and 12 to 15 for a double. A new chip layer can extend it.
