Flat Farm Country South of the City

Asphalt paving in Prairie Creek is country work on flat ground. The community sits at the junction of State Roads 63 and 246, southwest of Terre Haute, at about 532 feet. Its history runs back to Middletown, laid out by James D. Piety on August 24, 1831, along the old Vincennes Road; Jacob Ernest built the first brick house there in 1849, and the post office has operated since 1822. The Census Bureau recognized Prairie Creek as a census-designated place in its 2022 survey.

Flat land, slow water

The prairie south of Terre Haute is flat, and flat ground drains slowly. A driveway laid level here will hold puddles, and water that sits on or beside asphalt soaks into the base and freezes. We build in a deliberate cross slope or fall, keep the apron from becoming a low spot, and make sure water has somewhere to go, whether a lawn, swale or ditch.

Long lanes

Many properties have long gravel lanes. We quote hot-mix asphalt and tar and chip on the same sheet. HomeGuide puts hot mix at $5 to $12 or more per square foot and tar and chip at $2 to $5, with tar and chip lasting 7 to 10 years for a single layer against 15 to 30 for asphalt.

Farm traffic

Where grain trucks and equipment use a lane, we build heavier: more stone, thicker surface and wider turning areas.

State road connections

Driveways onto State Roads 63 and 246 fall under INDOT's driveway permit process for new or changed connections. INDOT's permit form calls for pipe cover of at least 12 inches over metal or concrete culverts and 24 inches over plastic. We check what applies before scheduling.

Culverts

Most rural driveways here cross a roadside ditch. A crushed or undersized pipe floods the driveway from below. We inspect it at the visit and recommend replacement when needed.

A typical lane scope

For a 600-foot gravel lane to a farmhouse and machine shed, a quote usually includes: regrading to restore a crown, adding and compacting stone where it is thin, replacing a crushed culvert at the road, widening the turning area by the shed, and surfacing with either hot-mix asphalt or tar and chip. Heavier sections go where trucks turn.

Maintenance

Asphalt lanes benefit from crack sealing each fall and sealcoating every few years. Tar-and-chip lanes need no sealcoat but should get a fresh chip layer when they wear thin. On both, keeping ditches clear protects the base.

Timing

Paving runs from late spring through early fall, once fields and lanes have dried out.

Old Vincennes Road country

Prairie Creek grew along the old road to Vincennes, and many properties here are still farms with outbuildings spread around the yard. Paved or chip-sealed areas between house, shop and barns cut mud in spring and dust in summer, and we build them heavier where trucks and tractors turn.

Prairie Creek Questions

How do you keep water off a driveway on flat ground?

We set a deliberate slope of about 1 to 2 percent toward a place water can go, such as a lawn, swale or ditch, and check it before paving.

Do I need a state permit for a driveway on State Road 63?

For a new or changed connection, generally yes, through INDOT. Repaving your own driveway behind the right-of-way usually does not need one.

Is tar and chip OK for farm traffic?

For light farm use, yes. For heavy grain trucks turning, hot-mix asphalt on a thick base holds up better in the turning areas.

How long does a long lane take?

Usually two to four days depending on length and base work.

Can you replace the culvert at my road?

Yes. If a new or changed connection to a state road is involved, INDOT's permit applies. For county roads, we check with the county.

Can you pave between my house and outbuildings?

Yes. We grade the yard to drain, build a stone base sized for the traffic, and surface it with asphalt or tar and chip.
